09/04/2010-5th message for 2010 released

The EEA's '10 messages for 2010' will highlight one theme per month until the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in October. The fifth message on 'Forest Ecosystems' was released in early April.

Forests cover a large part of Europe but the distribution of these ecosystems varies significantly across the continent. Forest ecosystems fulfil multiple functions for society; providing economic, social and environmental benefits, including serving as a key reservoir of biodiversity.

Unsustainable forest management, fragmentation, airborne pollution and climate change are major threats to Europe's forest biodiversity. Using protected areas and other management measures, European countries are protecting and restoring their forest biodiversity.
