28/09/2010- 10th message for 2010 released

The EEA's '10 messages for 2010' will highlight one theme per month until the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in October. The tenth, and final, message on 'Cultural landscapes and biodiversity heritage' was released in late September.

The diverse climatic conditions, the variations in geology and geomorphology added to the centuries of pre and post industrial land use have all created the diverse mosaic of cultural and natural landscapes, rich in biodiversity that is Europe. The landscapes of Europe have become highly fragmented and homogenised which threatens their biodiversity as well as adversely affecting their 'multifunctional' role. Through managing these 'multifunctional'landscapes Europe can preserve its cultural and natural heritage while simultaneously securing their role in providing valuable ecosystem services.
